The common transparent nucleating agents can be divided into two types: organic compounds and inorganic compounds.

Inorganic Nucleating Agents are mainly oxides of metals, such as talc, silica, titanium dioxide, benzoic acid and so on. This type of nucleating agent requires a particle size of less than 40m and is the first type of nucleating agent used. Because they do not dissolve in polymer melts, they naturally form crystal embryos during melt recrystallization. However, due to its own color, it is not ideal to improve the transparency and surface gloss of the finished product after using. Although a few manufacturers are still in use, but it is a low-grade product, the trend of its dosage decreases year by year, and will be eliminated eventually.

The main Organic Nucleating Agents are fatty carboxylic acid, aromatic metal soap, organophosphate and sorbitol benzylidene derivatives. Sorbitol and organophosphate are the most commonly used nucleating agents in the market.

Both of them have better transparent modification effect, but each has its advantages and disadvantages

Sorbitol Nucleating Agent can be melted in the melted PP, then forming a homogeneous system, so the nucleation effect is good, and the fusion with PP is good. Transparency is better than organophosphates. The disadvantage is that the flavor of parent aldehyde is easy to be released during processing.

Organophosphate Nucleating Agent has features of good heat resistance, odorless. But its nucleating effect and transparency are less than Sorbitol Nucleating Agent, but with high price and poor dispersion in PP.

The nucleating mechanism of the different types of nucleating agents mentioned above is consistent. However, because of some differences in the properties of nucleating agents, there are also some differences in improving the properties of PP in the processing process. For instance, sorbitol nucleating agent can not only greatly improve the transparency and surface gloss of PP, but also improve other physical and mechanical properties of PP: improving the rigidity, thermal deformation temperature and dimensional stability of PP. Therefore, dibenzylidene sorbitol is the most popular Transparent Nucleating Agent in the market.
